| MASSAGE THERAPY Massage Therapy originated in Asia and its use extends back into prehistory. Most cultures have some recorded, historical use of massage as a medical practice. Even Hippocrates, the “father of medicine”, by whom all current medical practitioners swear an oath when they become doctors, prescribed massage for pain or injury or disease for his patients in ancient Greece. Massage Therapy is a manual, physical application given by one individual to another individual via hands, forearms, elbows, knees or feet for therapeutic purposes. Many doctors in Europe and the United States as recent as the turn of the last century were still employing therapeutic massage techniques to treat pain and injury, even as a way to speed up the recovery of sprains and broken bones. The benefits of Massage Therapy are many: Reduces pain and inflammationLowers blood pressureIncreases circulationReduces the risk of injury from exercise and work-related activitiesReduces recovery time needed after injuryReduces stress, tension and fatigue (emotional or physical) Improves sleep Today’s therapeutic massage is not one kind of massage, but many. The average massage therapist acquires skills in several different types of massage to offer to clients who come to them. Deep Tissue massage: deep pressure applied with the elbows, forearms and hands affecting the deeper layers of muscle and the surface fascia to relax tension and releaase stagnation. It is useful for people with a high degree of sensitivity or pain who find it difficult to be touched or who do not tolerate deep pressure.
